When you move away from home, many things will be different. You will be able to come and go as you like – no more asking permission to do things. However, you will also need to become responsible for your own health care. That means organizing health insurance. In FL, you may have some different options, depending on your circumstances.

Sorting out insurance can be confusing. Talk with your parents and ask about their coverage. That could be a useful starting point. Does your employer offer group health benefits? They can be a good cost effective option, particularly if your budget is tight.

Don’t be blasé about your health coverage. While it may look like an expense you don’t feel is warranted when you’re young, you need to take into account what it might cost you if you have to go to the hospital unexpectedly. Do a bit of research and find out how much it costs to stay in hospital so you can compare it to the costs of maintaining insurance.

You need to be sensible about the money you are spending, but you need to make sure that the choices you make about how you set up your adult life will be the best for you in the long term. That includes making sure you can get medical treatment if you need it, so it can be beneficial to have health insurance. In FL, like everywhere, medical costs can be high. One large unexpected medical event could set you back financially if you have to using savings or borrowed funds to pay for it.
